Recently The Wall Street Journal wrote an article written by Andrew M. Kaikati and Jack G. Kaikati titled “Let’s Make a Deal – The growing role of barter in the marketplace”
The sluggish economy has given new life to bartering as more and more companies now resort to bartering to remove excess inventories, secure goods and services and attract new customers without laying out precious cash.
The article address the scenarios on the four different types of barter arrangements most commonly occur in the US.

Barter Is The New Buying Power, Despite the Economy
On November 28, The New York Times posted an article titled “New Buyer Power, Despite The Economy”
Paying jobs have been scarce these days for Jeff Horwitz, a building contractor from Campbell, but last weekend he went on a Christmas shopping spree.
He bought cases of wine, a concrete bench, a wall-mounted fountain, gift certificates and various knickknacks at a gift fair in Santa Clara. “This is nothing,” he said as he walked out the door, arms filled with a vase, a mirror and a ceramic knickknack. “My truck is already full.”
The bill? Nothing…............

In Lean Times, Restaurants Barter For Trade Services – By Wall Street Journal
Independent restaurants are turning to an old-fashioned method to fill tables—barter.
As they struggle to keep customers and pay the monthly bills, restaurants are swapping food for services like oven-hood cleaning and pest control.
Bartering helps restaurants fill seats, reassuring prospective customers who might be turned off by the sight of a vacant eatery. It also attracts new customers when tradespeople bring friends along, reduces some costs, and helps retain employees who can’t scoop tips off empty tables.
It’s hardly a permanent fix for ailing restaurants, which still need cash to cover such expenses as rent, mortgages, taxes and utilities. But bartering is an especially useful tool for independent restaurants that, unlike some chains, lack access to corporate credit lines or cash.
